Benefits of Mulch

Posted on August 4, 2016

At the end of any landscaping project in Weston or Newton, MA, Cataldo will lay a fresh layer of mulch across the gardens we have created. We have heard some of the rumors over the years, but we want you to know that mulch does more than just look great! It offers your garden many benefits, and we can think of a few off the top of our heads.

Stone WalkwaysHelps prevent weeds. Maybe the least appealing part of having a garden is keeping up with routine weeding. We do it to keep our gardens looking great and to protect our plants from being overtaken. Mulch can combat some of these problems because it inhibits some of the growth, which saves your back, your time, and your garden.

Insulates. This means keeping your plants’ roots cool in the summer heat and warm in the winter. Being in New England, we have to protect our plants anyway we can, and mulch is a great step to regulating the extreme changes of weather we have and preventing stress on your plants from those fluctuations.

Stops erosion. As you’ll find with most areas of dirt that are hit with rain (especially with our New England springs and summers), the soil can easily be lifted away, which can impact the health of your plants and overall landscape. Mulch assists in corrosion prevention by acting as a barrier between loose dirt and the impact of water.

Holds in moisture. Hot summer afternoons in our neck of the woods are pretty common, and keeping up with our plants can be difficult depending on their specific needs. Mulch helps keep in moisture, which can supply your plants with the necessary nutrition it requires.
